History of Weil Cornell Medicine

19th Century

OInApril,1898, this school was established with a donation by Col. Oliver H. Payne. It was founded in New York City because Ithaca where the main campus is situated was considered too small to offer sufficient Clinical Training Opportunities. James Ewing was the First Professor of Clinical Pathology at the school.

20th Century

A branch of this school was operated in Stimson Hall on the main campus. The 2 years Ithaca course paralleled the first two years of the New York school. In 1938, it was closed due to declining enrollment. In 1913, Weill Cornell became affiliated with New York Hospital which is now become New York–Presbyterian Hospital.

William Payne WWhitney’sdonation of $27 million in 1927 led to the building of the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic which became the name for Cornell’slarge psychiatric effort. In 1942, its Training School for Nurses became affiliated with the university and operated as the Cornell Nursing School until it closed in 1979.

New York Hospital fused with Presbyterian Hospital in 1998 which was the affiliate hospital of Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. Today, the merged institution operates as New York–Presbyterian Hospital. The faculty and instructional functions of the Cornell and Columbia units remain distinct and independent regardless of the Clinical Alliance.

Each hospital in the New York–Presbyterian Healthcare System is associated with one of the two colleges. In 1998, the school was renamed the Weill Medical College of Cornell University after receiving an endowment from Citigroup Chairman Sanford I. Weill.

21st Century

The school renamed itself Weill Cornell Medicine to better reflect its mission in 2015. Augustine M.K. Choi announced that Weill Cornell Medicine would make the cost of attendance free for all students who qualify for Financial Aid on September 16, 2019, made possible by an almost $160 million gift from The Starr Foundation directed by Weill Cornell Medicine Overseer Maurice.
