The university has grown over 60 years from a provincial feeder college to an international university with more than 33,000 students at four international centers and nine national campuses. The university was founded in 1951 when a division of the New South Wales University of Technology was established in Wollongong.

History
Foundation The University of Wollongong was established in 1951 as a division of the New South Wales University of Technology in Wollongong. The University of Wollongong gained its autonomy as an independent institution of higher education in 1975 by the Parliament of New South Wales.
Ken MacKinnon was appointed Vice-Chancellor in 1981, overseeing the university’s merger with the Wollongong Institute of Education in 1982. The University of Wollongong Dubai Campus in the United Arab Emirates was established in 1993.
Chancellor Mike Codd retired as Chancellor in 2009 after a three-four-year term. The center was named Mike Codd Building in honor of a former chancellor. The University of Wollongong Sydney campus opened in 2017 on Moore Street in Liverpool.

Campus
The Wollongong campus, as the university’s main campus, is located on the New South Wales coast, 80 km south of Sydney and 3 km from the center of Wollongong. Courses are offered in four faculties including the Faculty of Science, Medicine, and Health, the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences, the Faculty of Business and Law, and the Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities.
The University of Wollongong expanded into the growing South Western Sydney region in 2016, with a campus in the Liverpool CBD taking on its first students in 2017.
