The University of Hong Kong is a public institution of higher education in Pok Fu Lam, Hong Kong, founded in 1911. It is a research university. It was established in 1887. This university is also called HKU. The Motto of this university in English is Wisdom and Virtue.

It is the tertiary institution in Hong Kong. It has 10 academic faculties. HKU’s main medium of instruction is English. Also, this university was the first team to successfully separate the Coronavirus SARS-CoV in the world.

University of Hong Kong History

This university was established as the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese by Sir Kai Ho Kai. Later, it was included in the university faculty of medicine. In 1907, it was named as Hong Kong College of Medicine. In 1911, this college became the HKU Medical School.

Sir Frederick Lugard had planned to find a university in Hong Kong to participate with the other Great Powers opening universities in China. After the Canton Hong Kong Strikes, the government moved towards greater incorporation of Eastern culture increasing the number of Chinese courses.

The Japanese invasion of Hong Kong university buildings and the university closed until 1945. Medical College of the University of Hong Kong moved to Chengdu to run a school during this period. University reopened and investment in law and the Social Sciences increased as post-war reconstruction efforts began in Earnest after the end of the Second World War.

University of Hong Kong Campuses

The main campus of the university covers almost 177,000 square meters of the land of Pokfulam Road. Also, this university has a few buildings in Sandy Bay Gap.

This university advanced its name to HKU station which is the main public transport opened on December 28, 2014. HKU also operates the Kadoorie Agricultural Research Center occupies almost 95,000 sq meters of land in the New Territories and the Swire Institute of Marine Science.

Main Building

The main building is the oldest structure in the university constructed between 1910 and 1912. It was designed by the Architect Leigh & Orange. In 1952, the two courtyards were added in the South and one floor in the end block in 1958.

The university uses this campus as a classroom and laboratory for the Faculty of Medicine and Engineering. Later, it was the house of the departments in the Faculty of Arts.

Swire Building

Swire Group sponsored the building of a new residential hall at the eastern end of the campus in around 1980. The new student residence was named Swire Building because of the sponsorship. This building was officially opened in 1980 by Mr. John Anthony Swire CBE. Director of Center Media Resources Mrs. J. Lau provided a design for the hall logo in 1983. The logo shows the words S & H.

Centennial Campus

To provide further space for students under the new 4-year undergraduate curriculum, the Centennial Campus was built at the western end of the main campus. It was formerly occupied by the Water Supplies Department.

In late 2009, the construction of the campus started. The faculty of arts, faculty of social sciences, and faculty of law shifted to the Centennial Campus.
