The University of Glasgow is a public institution of higher education in Glasgow, Scotland. It is a research university. This university was established on January 7, 1451. The Motto of this university in English is The Way, The Truth, The Life. During the 18th century, this university was part of the Scottish Enlightenment along with the universities of Edinburgh, St Andrews, and Aberdeen.
It is the largest university by enrollment in Scotland. Glasgow served all of its students by preparing them for professions like Law, Civil Service, Medicine, Teaching, and the Church. Also, it trained smaller but rising numbers for careers in Science and Engineering. Since 1870, this university has been situated in the city of High Street.
University of Glasgow History
In 1451, this university was established by contract or papal bull from Pope Nicholas V at the idea of King James II giving Bishop William Turnbull who was a graduate of the University of St Andrews permission to add a university to the city of Cathedral.
During the political unrest associated with the Scottish Reformation in 1560, the Chancellor Archbishop James Beaton a supporter of the Marian cause fled to France.
He took with him many of the archives and valuables of the cathedral and the university including the Mace and the Bull for safekeeping. In 1590, Mace was sent back but archives were not. On August 28, 1690, Principal James Fall told the Parliamentary Commissioners of Visitation that he had seen the Bull at the Scots College in Paris together with the many charters approved to the university by the monarchs of Scotland from James II to Mary Queen of Scots.
Teaching at the university started in the Chapter House of Glasgow Cathedral after shifting to nearby Rottenrow in a building known as the Auld Pedagogy. In 1563, the university was given 13 acres of land belonging to the Black Friars on High Street by Mary the Queen of Scots.
By the late 17th century, its building centered on two courtyards bounded by walled gardens with a clock tower which was one of the notable features of the Glasgow skyline reaching almost 140 feet in height, and a chapel modified from the church of the earlier Dominican friary. Delphine Parrott became its first female professor as Gardiner Professor of Immunology in 1973. The university court voted for the university to become the first academic institution in Europe to Divest from the Fossil Fuel Industry in October 2014.

University of Glasgow Campus
Currently, this university is spread into a few campuses. The main one is the Gilmorehill campus in Hillhead. As well as, there is the Garscube Estate in Bearsden housing the Veterinary School, Observatory, Ship Model Basin, and many of the university sports facilities including the Dental School in the city center.
High Street at the University of Glasgow
Initially, the university housing including Glasgow University Library was part of the complex of religious buildings in the area of Glasgow Cathedral. The university received a donation of land in 1460 from James Hamilton on the east side of the High Street instantly north of the Blackfriars Church on which it had its home for the next 4 hundred years.
During the mid of the 17th century, the Hamilton Building was replaced with a very grand two-court building with a decorated west front facing the High Street called the Nova Erectio or New Building. Glasgow’s size and scope constantly expand over the following centuries. In 1757, it built the Macfarlane Observatory.
Later, Scotland’s first public museum the Hunterian. It was a center of the Scottish Enlightenment and consequently of the Industrial Revolution and its development in the High Street was inhibited.
Gilmorehill at the University of Glasgow
The university shifted to Gilmorehill in the West End of the city in 1870. It is about 5km from its earlier location enclosed by a large Meander of the River Kelvin. The original location on the High Street was sold to the City of Glasgow Union Railway and replaced by the college Goods Yard.
Many buildings were built to the west of the Main Building developing the land among University Avenue and the River Kelvin with Natural Science Buildings and the Faculty of Medicine.
In the 1960s, the expected expansion of tertiary education following the publication of the Robbins Report led the university to build several modern buildings across Hillhead in a development zone originally comprising mostly residential tenements that had been nominated on the north side of University Avenue in 1945.
Chapel at the University of Glasgow
Glasgow University Chapel was constructed as a memorial to the 755 sons of the university who had died in the First World War. It was designed by Sir John Burnet. It was completed in 1929 and dedicated in October. Medication on the wall behind the Communion Table lists the names of those who died while other tablets beside the stalls record more than 405 members of the university society in the Second World War.
There is a Service of Nine Lessons and Carols on the last Sunday of term before Christmas and a Watch Night service on Christmas Eve.

This university has residence halls in and around the North West of the city housing a total of about 3,500 students as well as teaching campuses. This includes These include the Murano Street halls in Maryhill, Queen Margaret halls in Kelvinside, Wolfson halls on the Garscube Estate, Cairncross House, and Kelvinhaugh Gate in Yorkhill.
Dalrymple House and Horslethill Halls in Dowanhill, Reith Halls in North Kelvinside, and the Maclay Halls in Park Circus have closed in recent years and have been sold as the expansion value of such property increased.
Library and Archives at the University of Glasgow
The University Library is located on Hillhead Street opposite the main building. It is located on more than 12 floors and hosts over 3 million books and journals as well as access to a wide range of electronic resources involving more than 51,900 electronic journals. Also, it houses sections for Periodicals, Microfilms, Special Collections, and Rare Materials. It opens between 7 AM and 2 AM and 361 days of the year.
