History of the University of Chicago
In 1890, this university was included as a coeducational institution by the American Baptist Education Society. It used almost $400,000 donated to ABES to increment a $600,000 contribution from Standard Oil co-founder John D. Rockefeller.
Rockefeller’s contribution provided money for Academic Operations and Long Term Endowment. It was fixed that such money could not be used for buildings. The Hyde Park campus was financed by contributions from wealthy Chicagoans as like Silas B. Cobb who provided the donations for the Cobb Lecture Hall, Campus First Building.
Other early benefactors incorporated businessmen are Charles L. Hutchinson, Adolphus Clay Bartlett, Leon Mandel, and Martin A. Ryerson who funded the construction of the Gymnasium and Assembly Hall, and George C. Walker of the Walker Museum who was a relative of Cobb and encouraged his initial donation for facilities.
