The University of Bordeaux is a public institution of higher education in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in Southwestern France. It was established in 1441. The Motto of this university in English is May the Light Illuminate the Millennia.
This university is a member of the Community of Universities & Higher Education Institutions of Aquitaine. Nowadays, it is one of the most significant universities in France and Europe.
University of Bordeaux History
On June 7th, 1441, this university was established by Pope Eugene IV. This university with its 4 faculties which were Art, Medicine, Theology, and Law made it possible for the students from the Duchy of Aquitaine to study when the city was under English rule.
In 1453, at the end of the 100 Years War, the university came under the Royal Power when Bordeaux returned to the fold of the Kingdom of France but it struggled to develop a place for itself. During the French Revolution in 1793, this university was destroyed by the National Convention. As a result of Law on July 18, 1896, this university was again re-opened.
This university was divided into 3 universities in 1970 which were Bordeaux 1, Bordeaux 2, and Bordeaux 3. Bordeaux 4 separate from from Bordeaux 1 in 1975. In 1806, Napoleon Bonaparte brought back the idea of the university.
In 1808, the Faculty of Theology was renovated in this university followed by the Faculties of Liberal Arts & Sciences in 1838. The above-mentioned universities have been re-combined to form this university excluding Bordeaux 3 which was not included in the unification and remains independent of this university.

- In 1808: Napoleon Bonaparte reorganized the university into 3 faculties which focused on Theology, Arts, and Science.
