University College London is a public institution in London, England. It is a research university. The other name of this university is UCL. UCL was founded in 1826. The Motto of the UCL in English is to let all who by merit deserve the most reward. It is the 2nd largest university in the United Kingdom by total enrollment.
University College London History
This university was founded as a London University motivated by the radical ideas of Jeremy Bentham. UCL was founded as an alternative to the Anglican Universities of Cambridge and Oxford. It took the form of a Joint Stock Company with shares sold for £100 to a proprietor under the name of London University.
London University established the London University School in 1830 which would later become University College School. Almost, after a decade of trying to win credit as a university and the right to award degrees, the owner of London University accepted the government proposal to found the University of London as an independent examining body and accepted the status of a college for their institution.
As a result, the proprietors of London University were included by royal charter under the name University College, London on November 28, 1836. In 1907, UCL chose to be merged into the university under the University College London Act 1905. Its official name became the University of London, University College.
A new charter restored UCL’s legal independence and was then formally known as University College London. This name neglected the comma used in its former name of “University College, London”.
