The University of Queensland

The University of Queensland is a public research university located in Brisbane, the state of Queensland’s capital city of Australia. The university was founded by Queensland in 1909. Before proposals for a university in Queensland began in 1870 and recommended the immediate establishment of a university by Sir Charles Lilley.

About The University of Queensland

History

Primary education was the priority and technical education was the secondary. The government was unwilling to commit funds against the Royal Commission for the establishment of a university. A group of private individuals organized public lecture courses in adult education for the extension of the University in 1893.

Australia abolished the binary system reorganized its higher education system and merged Agricultural College with Queensland to establish the new campus namely Gatton Campus.

Campus

The University of Queensland has its main campus in the suburb of St Lucia in Brisbane and maintains many campuses and facilities and main campus is recognized for its beauty. St Lucia campus was built using money donated by James O’Neil Mayne and Mary Emelia Mayne in 1927 and construction began in 1937, the Great Court was added to the University.

The Art Museum is situated in the James and Mary Emelia Mayne Centre on the St Lucia Campus and was established in 1976 in the Forgan Smith Tower. The museum supports teaching and research and the Anthropology Museum plays a key role in the collection of ethnographic material and is also open to the public.

UQ Library developed from a small to a major research library and consists of 11 branches.

Research

The research advancement of the university has strong research and focus in medicine, technology, and science including pioneering the development of cervical cancer vaccines, Cervarix, and Gardasil by Ian Frazer professor of UQ.

The University of Queensland has taken the lead in many areas of cancer research by the report of the Australian Cancer Research in 2009. The UQ plays a key role in Brisbane Diamantina Health Partners and the first academic health science system of Queensland.

Administration and Organization

The UQ is divided into several logistical and administrative purposes for academics. The Senate has the wide powers to appoint staff, control and manage university property and affairs, and also control and manage finances for the promotion of the University by the University of Queensland Act 1998.

The academic board is the senior academic advisory body of the university that formulates policy including new programs, learning, research, promotions, assessment, and teaching on academic and student matters.

The University of Queensland QS ranking is 43rd and 47th in the world by Academic Ranking of World Universities.
