Mustansiriyah University is one of the oldest public universities in Baghdad, Iraq. It was established in 1227. The Motto of this university in English is O Lord, Increase my Knowledge.
History of the Mustansiriyah University
In 1227, this university was created by the founder of Abbasid Caliph Al-Mustansir. Its structure was on the left side of the Tigris River survived by Mongol Invasion in 1258. In 1963, with the financial support of the Republic of Iraq Teachers Union, the modern Mustansiriyah University came into being.
This university was given the status of a partial state institution in 1964. Also, this university combined with Al-Sha’bab University which had been founded by the Iraqi Association of Economists. Primarily, this university managed colleges in Mosul and Basra. A Law was approved under which the private universities were transformed into public universities in 1966.
Thus, Mustansiriyah became a college at the University of Baghdad. A main reorganization of higher education was started in 1967 with the aim that all earlier institutions would be destroyed and renovated by 1969. In 1968, this university was nominated as a separate university.
The branch campuses of this university were separated to form part of the University of Mosul and the University of Basra.
