Training Teachers for Normal School

This institution is the successor of two top educational institutions founded by Jules Ferry:

  • The Normal Superior School of Fontenay-aux-Roses for girls was in 1880.
  • The Normal Superior School of Saint-Cloud for boys which was in 1882.

These two schools used to train the professors of the French Normal Schools enlisted among the most brilliant French students.

Whereas these schools were mainly regarded as supremacy their sisters the eldest The Normal Superior School of Ulm Street and her womanly counterpart The Normal Superior School of Young Girls of Sevres which trained Academics were de facto dedicated to the heirs of the Parisian elites.

A Shift towards Secondary & Higher Education

An Announcement on February 19, 1945, granted both institutions the title of Normal Schools Preparatory to Secondary Education. The purpose of the School changed with the growth of the French Education System.

The length of studies was increased to 4 years by 1956 to institute a preparation for the amassment. They associated their development strategies with those of the ENS Ulm and Sevres increasingly opening up to research.

The Relocation in Lyon

In 1987, the Scientific Departments of the Schools shifted to Germany as a part of France’s process of de-centralization which is an old Industrial District of Lyon in the location of the current Monod campus. The relocated institution was named ENS Lyon.

The students of the Humanities remained in the Parisian suburbs in the coeducational Fontenay–Saint–Cloud Normal School. Unofficially, this school was renamed the Higher Normal School of Letters and Human Sciences in 2000 and was transferred to the new Descartes Campus which is also located in Germany.

The two branches fused to become a single institution in January 2010 retaining the name Lyon Normal School.
