Ludwig Maximilian University History

1472-1800

In 1472, this university was established with Papal approval as the University of Ingolstadt with faculties of Philosophy, Jurisprudence, Medicine, and Theology. The first rector of this university was Christopher Mendel of Steinfels who later became bishop of Chiemsee.

The academics of the university included names such as Conrad Celtes and Petrus Apianus in the period of German Humanism. Also, the theologian Johann Eck taught at this university. The Jesuits influenced this university and became one of the centers of the Counter-Reformation from 1549 to 1773.

The university was influenced by the Enlightenment which led to a stronger importance on Natural Science at the end of the 18th century.

1800-1933

Prince Elector Maximilian IV Joseph shifted the university to Landshut in 1800 due to French violent behavior that threatened Ingolstadt during the Napoleonic Wars. This university was renamed as Ludwig Maximilian University in honor of its two founders in 1802.

Maximilian von Montgelas who was the Minister of Education initiated several reforms that wanted to modernize the rather conservative and Jesuit-influenced university. It was moved to Munich in 1826. The university was situated in the Old Academy until a new building in the Ludwigstraße was finished.

The university rose to great distinction in the European Scientific Community in the second half of the 19th century and attracted many of the leading scientists of the world. Women were allowed to study at Bavarian universities from 1903 and the female proportion of students at this university had reached 18% in 1918. Adele Hartmann became the first woman in Germany to earn a Habilitation at this university.

1933-1945

Academic freedom was strictly curtailed during the 3rd Reich. White Rose group in 1943 consisting of Anti-Nazi students carried out a campaign opposing the National Socialists at this university. The university later removed Kurt Huber, a Nazi opposition fighter from his position & revoked his Doctorate upon his arrest.
