It is the first United States University based on the European Research Institution model. This university was named for its first benefactor Johns Hopkins. On February 22, 1876, the first president of the JHU Daniel Coit Gilman led the university to develop higher education in the United States by integrating teaching and research.
This university is a founding member of the American Association of Universities. Also, this university has graduate campuses in China, Italy, and Washington D.C.
Johns Hopkins University History
On his death in 1873, Johns Hopkins who was a Quaker entrepreneur and childless bachelor bequeathed almost $7 Million to fund a hospital and university in Baltimore. This contribution generated mainly from the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the major philanthropic gift in the history of the United States at that time.
Gilman, who was a Yale-educated scholar had been serving as president of the University of California, Berkeley former to this appointment. He focused on the development of graduate education and support of faculty research.
Developing Clifton for the university was costly and almost 30 acres of the estate had to be sold to the city as a Public Park. This land was officially transferred to the university in February 1902. The University exceeded its buildings and the trustees began to search for a new home in the early 20th century.
