Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is a public institution of higher education in Delhi, India. It was established in 1961. This institute is also known as IIT Delhi.
History of Indian Institute of Technology Delhi
The idea of the Indian Institute of Technology was first introduced by Sh. N.M.Sircar was hen a Member of Education on the Executive Council of the Viceroy. In 1950, the first Indian Institute of Technology was founded in Kharagpur following his recommendations.
Shri Sircar suggested that such Institutes should also be started in different parts of the country in his report. The Government accepted these recommendations of the Sircar Committee firm to establish more Institutes of Technology with the assistance of friendly countries that were prepared to help.
The first offer of help came from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics who agreed to cooperate in the foundation of an Institute through the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in Bombay. This was followed by the Institutes of Technology at Madras, Kanpur, and Delhi in cooperation with West Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
On January 28, 1959, the Uke of Edinburgh laid the foundation stone of the college at Hauz Khas during his visit to India. In 1961, the first admissions were made. The College of Engineering and Technology was registered as a society on 14 June 1960 under the Societies Registration Act No. XXI1860.
University Pole
On August 16, 1961, the students were asked to report to the college & the college was officially inaugurated on 17 August 1961 by Humayun Kabir. The Department of Textile Technology of Delhi College of Engineering was moved out en masse to mark the start of this institute at its new campus at Hauz Khas.
Later, the college was accorded the status of a university and was renamed as Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. This institute was one of the first six institutes to be awarded the Institute of Eminence status in 2018. This institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding to found the first global campus of IIT Delhi in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Campus at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi
Main Campus
The main campus of this institute is situated in Hauz Khas, South Delhi, with Sonipat and Jhajjar being the two satellite campuses. It is placed on a land area of almost 325 acres. It is surrounded by the Hauz Khas area and monuments such as the Qutub Minar & Lotus Temple.
Also, this campus is close to other educational institutions such as International Management Institute, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, National Institute of Fashion Technology, National Council of Educational Research and Training and Indian Statistical Institute. The campus of this institute is divided into 4 zones which are:

Sonipat Campus
Primarily, the new IITD-Sonipat campus was announced in 2012 and was unveiled in April 2018 by the Chief Minister of Haryana at the Techno-park at Rajiv Gandhi Education City, Sonipat. The Techno-park of which this campus is part of itself was founded at a cost of almost INR175 crore.
The Campus in Sonipat focuses on Executive and faculty Development programs for the Engineering and technical colleges of Haryana state as well as the Design and development of Advanced Technology to incubate more start-ups and promote industry cooperation.
Facilities include Research and Development Labs set up by corporations with IIT Delhi, Business Incubators, Impact labs for Path, a Global Health Innovation Hub, High-End Central Research Facilities & centers of Excellence in Smart Manufacturing, Training Centers, and convention Facilities.
Jhajjar Campus
The Jhajjar campus of this institute is next to the AIIMS-Delhi Jhajjar campus at Badsa village in the Jhajjar district of Haryana.
This institute and AIIMS are mutually setting up a biomedical research park at this campus including a joint Ph.D. Supervision Program and Provision for Adjunct Faculty. IITD-Jhajjar is funded by this institute and managed by the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer.
