Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is a public research institution of higher education in Powai, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It was established in 1958. The motto of this institute in English is Knowledge is the Supreme Goal. This institute is also known as IIT Bombay.
Indian Institute of Technology Bombay History
In 1958, it was the 2nd Indian Institute of Technology to be founded with assistance from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization & with funds contributed by the Soviet Union. UNESCO decided to provide Equipment & Technical Experts mostly from the Soviet Union while the Government of India accepted the responsibility for all other expenses.
The place selected for this institute was Powai with an area of almost 550 acres which was given by the then Bombay State Government. The first academic session of this institute opened on July 25, 1958, in its temporary home at the Synthetic & Art Silk Mills Research Association building in Worli with 100 students when its manufacturing was being finished.
The position regarding the assistance received from UNESCO under the Expanded Program of Technical Assistance is:
- Equipment costing almost Rs.57, 35,000 has far been received.
- 12 Progressors & 3 Russian translators are working at the Institution.
- Almost 4 Indian teachers were deputed in 1958 and 6 more teachers were selected for advanced training in USSR
These students were chosen from more than 3,400 applicants for admission to the first-year Undergraduate Engineering programs. One of the main objectives of creating this institute was to extend facilities for studies in a variety of specialized Engineering and Technological Sciences.
The need for establishing sufficient facilities for Postgraduate Studies and Research was kept in mind in the beginning years. This institute was conferred the status of Institute of Eminence on July 9, 2018, by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development along with five other institutes in India which would provide it further independence & government funds.

Campus at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay
The campus of this institute is on an area of almost 545 acres. It is located at Powai, in East Mumbai between the Vihar and Powai lakes. The academic area comprises of the Main Building, Various Departmental Annexes and auditoria.
All department annexes of this institute are linked by a corridor named Infinite Corridor. There are almost 18 Hostels of which two hostels & a wing of the newly constructed hostel are for female students. It has a major green cover and is untouched by the pollution of the rest of the city.
The closeness of the campus to the National Park has led to occasional sightings of Leopards and Mugger Crocodiles along the banks of the Powai Lake. Also, the campus has recorded more than 200 species of birds.
This institute has two swimming pools, Football, Hockey, and Cricket grounds, and Tennis, Basketball, and Volleyball Courts. Additionally, the campus also houses two high schools one of which is a Kendriya Vidyalaya, and the other is called IIT Campus School.
