Indian Institute of Science is a public institution of higher education in the Southern Indian city of Bangalore, Karnataka. It was established in 1909. This institute is also known as IISc.

Indian Institute of Science History

In 1893, after a meeting between Jamsetji Tata and Swami Vivekananda on a ship where they discussed a plan of bringing the steel industry to India, Tata wrote to Vivekananda 5 years later t trust, you remember me as a fellow traveler on your journey from Japan to Chicago.

I very much remember at this moment your views on the development of the severe spirit in India. I remind these ideas in connection with my scheme of Research Institute of Science for India which you have doubtless heard or read.

Tata wanted him to guide his campaign impressed by VVivekananda’sviews on Science &and leadership abilities, Vivekananda approved the project with Enthusiasm, and Tata to advance the scientific capabilities of the country constituted a Provisional Committee to organize a plan for setting up a Institute of Research & Higher Education.

On December 31, 1898, the committee offered a draft proposal to Viceroy George Curzon. The land and other facilities for this institution were donated by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV & Tata. Maharaja donated almost 371 acres of land and Tata gave several buildings towards the formation of this institute.

Also, Maharaja granted almost Rs. 5, 00,000 towards capital expenditure and Rs 50,000 for yearly expenses. Nizam Usman Ali Khan also contributed an amount of almost Rs 3, 00,000 oover31 the years. The establishment of the institute was approved by Viceroy Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound.

Maharaja laid the foundation stone of the institute in early 1911 and the first batch of students was admitted on July 24 to the Departments of General & Applied Chemistry under Norman Rudolf. Department of Organic Chemistry was opened within 2 months. The institute was deemed a university by the University Grants Commission of India in 1958.

B Tech in Computing & Mathematics is a newly launched undergraduate program. This program offers almost 52 seats & charges an amount of almost INR 2.05 Lacs for the complete program.

Coursework of the program involves Research, Development, Next Generation Technologies, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Data Science.

IISc Bangalore B Tech (Computer and Mathematics) Eligibility Criteria

  • Hopeful applicants must have passed Class 12th in Physics, Mathematics, a language, Chemistry, and any subject other than these 4 above.

IISc Bangalore B Tech (Computing and Mathematics) Selection Criteria

Selection to the IISc Bangalore B Tech in Computing and Mathematics is made based on the JEE advanced exam score. This institute allows a reservation with disability & Kashmiri Migrant.

This is done as per the government of India regulations. Also, this institute reserves 20% Supernumerary Quota for female candidates and 10% for foreign nationals.

IISc Bangalore M. Tech Admission 2023

This institute offers a full-time M. Tech program in more than 18 different specializations in a minimum duration of 2 years and charges a fee of almost INR 29,200 for the very 1st year of the M. Tech program.

Campuses at the Indian Institute of Science

Bangalore Campus

The campus of this institute is situated in the north of Bangalore which is about 6 kilometers from Bangalore City Railway Station and Kempegowda Bus Station on the way to Yeshwantpur. Several other research institutes are close to this institute like the Indian Space Research Organization, Raman Research Institute, Wood Research Institute, and Central Power Research Institute.

Most of these institutes are connected to this institute by a regular shuttle bus service. This campus houses over 40 departments marked by routes as like Gulmohar Marga, Badami Marga, Mahogany Marga, Ashoka Marga, Tala Marga,  Nilgiri Marg, Amra Marga Silver Oak Marg, and Arjuna Marga.

This campus features 6 Canteens, a Gymkhana, a Football Ground & a Cricket Ground, 5 Dining Messes, 9 Men & 5 Women Dormitories, and 2 Shopping Centers and residences of the faculty members and other staff.

Challakere Campus

A second campus of this institute is in Challakere. It is situated on a land area of almost 1,500 acres. The infrastructure developed here involves a Skill Development Centre funded by HAL under the CSR Act, a Solar Power Research Center, a Talent Development Centre, and a Climate Observatory.

The Centre for Technologies has started its activities under the project C-BELT. They were instruments for identifying the required of almost 1500 acres of land for the new campus getting the existing building leased from the Sheep Farm getting the various approvals from the government.

Internationally, this institute is ranked # 155th in the World and # 52nd in Asia by QS World University Rankings in 2023. In 2022, it is ranked as # 42nd in Asia and # 18th in Emerging by the Times Higher Education.
