Humboldt University of Berlin is a public research university of higher education in the borough of Mitte in Berlin, Germany. It was established in 1810. The motto of this university is the Entity of Sciences. It is also known as HU Berlin.

About Humboldt University of Berlin

This university was founded as the University of Berlin in 1809 and opened in 1810. From 1828 to 1945, it was named as Friedrich Wilhelm University. This university was given its present name in 1949.  It is one of the most prominent universities not only in Germany but also in Europe.

This university has a world-class status in the Arts & Humanities Fields. Also, it is simply known as the University of Berlin. This university is recognized as one of the revolutionary Higher Education Institutions.

The academic power of this institution is evidenced by the fact that it has educated no less than 29 Nobel prizewinners including Max Born who won the prize for physics in 1954. Also, Theodor Mommsen who won the prize for Literature in 1902 &  Wassily Leontief who won the prize for Economics in 1973.

This university consists of three different campuses namely:

  • Campus Mitte

Campus Mitte

It is the oldest of the 3 campuses of this university. All of the Humanities, Social Sciences, Economics, and Business Administration Faculties & their departments are situated here among the French Cathedral, Berbelplatz, Brandenburg Gate, Lustgarten, and other sites around the splendid boulevard of Unter den Linden in Berlin historical center.

The heart of Campus Mitte is the HU main building at Unter den Linden 6 with several Political Institutions, Embassies, Cultural Institutes, Historic Buildings, Cafes, Shops, and Hotels nearby. Campus Mitte adds a gallant touch to its historical surroundings with its true research & teaching treasures.

Campus Nord

The Campus Nord at this university is in the heart of the Berlin lively Mitte district among Invalidenstraße and Luisenstraße. The center of the campus is an 80,000 m² park area with old Trees and Historical Red Clinker Brick Buildings that were built between the late 18th and mid of the 20th  centuries.

They are connected by the former Royal Veterinary College Anatomy Theatre designed over than 200 years ago by Carl Gotthard Langhans. It is the house of the Life Science Departments including the University Medical Center Charité.

Campus Adlershof at Humboldt University of Berlin

This campus is the vital heart of Berlin Adlershof Science City with over 6,000 students. The buildings which were built between 1998 and 2003 provided first-class teaching & research facilities to the departments of Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology.
