Campuses at Heidelberg University
Heidelberg is a city with almost 140,000 populations. It is located in the Rhine Neckar Triangle which is a European Metropolitan Area with around about 2.4 million people living there. Heidelberg is also known as the cradle of Romanticism. The facilities of this university are separated into two parts.
The faculties & institutes of Humanities and Social Sciences are embedded within the Old Town Campus. The Sciences Faculties & Medical School including 3 large university hospitals are located on the New Campus of Heidelberg.
Old Town Campus
The New University is considered the center of the Old Town Campus. It is placed at University Square in the Pedestrian Zone in direct vicinity to the University Library & the main Administration Buildings. In 1931, the New University was officially opened.
It houses the New Assembly Hall, the Largest Lecture Halls, and numerous smaller Seminar Rooms mostly used by the faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences. Education in Humanities and Social Sciences takes place to a great extent in buildings spread over the ancient part of town. The faculties maintain their wide-ranging libraries & workspaces for students.
Neuenheimer Feld – New Campus
This university started building a New Campus near the city district of Neuenheim called the Neuenheimer Feld in1960s. Today, it is the largest part of the university and the largest campus for Natural Sciences and life Science in Germany.
Almost all of the science faculties and institutes, University Hospital Heidelberg, the Medical School, and the science branch of the University Library are located on the New Campus. Several independent research institutes such as the German Cancer Research Center & 2 of the Max Planck Institutes have settled at this campus.
The Neuenheimer Feld campus has widespread parking lots for faculty & student vehicles for long-term and short-term parking as well as visitors and patients of the diverse University Hospitals.
Bergheim Campus
Bergheim Campus of this university is situated in the earlier Ludolf Krehl clinic in the inner city suburb of Heidelberg-Bergheim. Since March 2009, it has housed the institutes of Economics, Political Science, and Sociology that formerly resided at the Old Town campus.
The Bergheim campus offers one Lecture Theatre, numerous Seminar Rooms, the most modern of the university libraries, and a cafe. Also, the Bergheim Campus has become the site of the Centre for Asian and Trans-cultural Studies of this university.

The Rectorate is the executive body of the university headed by rector Bernhard Eitel.
