About Free University of Berlin

In 1948, this university was founded under American support during the Early Cold War Period as a Western continuation of the Friedrich Wilhelm University or the University of Berlin. It is an independent state-financed German university. In 1970, this university was restructured and again in 1974.

This university was divided by a group of Professors & students who broke away from East Berlin Friedrich Wilhelm University to seek Academic Freedom. FU Berlin stands on the rules of Academic Freedom & Democracy. Nowadays, it is one of the 11 Elite German Research universities.

Campuses at the Free University of Berlin

Dahlem Campus

This campus is situated on a land area of almost 106 acres. It is one of a kind of Botanic Garden containing over 20,000 wild plants. Habelschwerdter Allee 45 & Fabeck Street 23-25 together are the site of the largest university building complex in Dahlem.

The complex houses numerous Humanities and Social Science Subjects with 14 smaller departments from the Department of History & Cultural Studies.

A range of Institutes and departments are spread over the Dahlem campus. The School of Business & Economics, Department of Law, and the Otto Suhr Institute for Political Sciences are all located near the Henry Ford Building & University Library.

Geocampus Lankwitz

Earlier, this campus was a part of Teacher Training College. Now, it is a house in the Department of Earth Sciences & a part of the archives of the university.

Campus Duppel

This campus is about 2 km southwest of the Main Campus. It comprises several Clinics & Institutes amongst them a Small Animal Clinic, An Institute of Poultry Diseases & a Clinic for Horses. Many Divisions of the Department of Veterinary Medicine are based in Duppel.

Campus Benjamin Franklin

This campus has used Public Hospitals as part of the Medical Faculty since the establishment of this university. Steglitz Clinic was built with large financial support from the United States between 1959 & 1969.  The Medical Center became one of the major European Medical Establishments unifying all Institutes, Clinics & Lecture Halls.

This clinic was renamed as University Clinic Benjamin Franklin in honor of the support by the United States. It consists of 36 Scientific Institutes & almost, 200 Hospital Beds. It became part of the Charité Medical School after the merger in 2003.
