ETH Zurich University is a public institution of higher education in Switzerland. It is a research university in Zurich. It was founded in 1855 as the Federal Polytechnic School.

ETH is considered the world’s most distinguished university in Science and Technology. The school mainly focuses on Mathematics, Engineering, Technology, and Science.

It is known for its influence on the progression of advancements in Science and Technology. Also, it is a part of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology Domain like its sister institution Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology in Lausanne.

ETH Zurich History

In 1854, ETH Zurich University was established by the Swiss Confederation. It started giving its lectures in 1855 as a Polytechnic Institute at different sites all over the city of Zurich. This is a Federal Institute while the University of Zurich is a Cantonal Institution.

Initially, it was comprised of 6 faculties Chemistry Forestry, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Political Science, Architecture, and an integrated department for the fields of Natural Science, Literature, and Social Sciences.

Still, this is known as Polytechnikum or Poly.  Under the Presidency of Jerome Franel from 1905 to 1908, the ETH Zurich course program was reorganized into a real university. The first doctorates were awarded in the year 1909.

Reorganization structured the university into 12 departments in 1924. Currently, it has almost 16 departments.

ETH Zurich Campus

It has two campuses.  In 1858-1864, the main building was constructed outside and right above the Eastern border of the town. Nowadays, it is situated right in the heart of the city. Its main building stands directly across the street from:

Main Building

ETH’s main building was constructed under Gustav Zeuner. It highlighted the bold and clear massing with detailing such as the dismissed ground level and giant order above that derived partly from the work of Donato Bramante and Andrea Palladio.

Honggerberg Campus

On the 150th Anniversary of ETH Zurich, a wide project known as Science City for this campus began intending to convert the campus into an attractive district based on the Principle of Sustainability. The Science departments of the university are here.

Commuting Between the Campuses

ETH Link

ETH Link is a free bus for faculty, employees, students, and affiliates that links the two campuses of ETH Zurich. The bus runs 3 times an hour and takes almost 15 minutes during the school week.

Bike Share

An Electric Bike Sharing System between the two campuses is also available since 2018. Also, there are rental stations on both of its campuses.

ETH Laboratory of Ion Beam Physics

ETH Laboratory of Ion Beam Physics which is also famous as LIB is a physics laboratory. It is in Science City. This laboratory specializes in Accelerator Mass Spectrometry. The use of Ion Beam-based techniques with applications in Life Science, Material Science, Earth Science, Archeology, and Fundamental Physics. LIB is developing the next generation of Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) machines.

Tuition and Financial Assistance

Being a public university, its tuition fees are nearly CHF 730 each semester. Merit and Need Based Scholarships both are available. A merit scholarship program for the Master’s students is the Excellence Scholarships and Opportunity Program (ESOP) with excellent grades in their undergraduate program.

Student Associations

ETH has more than 100 student associations in which the most notable is the VSETH. This association forms the umbrella organization in all fields of study. The biggest career fair on campus is the Polymesse.

Another student organization is the ETH Juniors. This student association forms a bridge between industry and ETH Zurich. It also offers several services for students and companies like the Student Led Consulting Group.

Sports at ETH Zurich

Academics Sports Associations of Zurich which is also famous as ASVZ offers over 120 sports. SOLA Stafette is the largest annual sports event in the ETH Zurich. This event comprises almost 14 sections over a total distance of 140km. In the edition 2009, more than 760 teams participated.

Innovations

Student Project House

ETH Zurich permitted the creation of the Student Project House in 2017. Its purpose is to encourage student projects and foster innovation.  A test comprising of Maker space and co-working space was formed on the Honggerberg campus near the main building of the ETH.

Both maker spaces consist of workspaces for Electronics Fabrication, Wood and Metalworking, and an array of 3D printers for students.

Spin-Offs

This university promotes Technology and transfer Knowledge through an ecosystem to foster Spin-Offs and Start-Ups. 527 ETH Zurich Spin-Off companies have been created as of 2022.
