Columbia University History

This university was founded as the Colonial College under George II of Great Britain. In 1784, this college was renamed as the Columbia College following the American Revolution. In 1787, the Regents became aware of the college’s imperfect establishment and selected a revision committee.

This committee was headed by Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. This college decided to include its medical school with The College of Physicians and Surgeons which was a new school formed by the Regents of New York forming Columbia University College of Physicians in 1813.

This institution quickly assumed the form of a modern university under the president of F.A.P. Barnard during the 1st half of the 19th century. In 1889, Barnard College was established. The college investments in New York Real Estate became a primary source of steady income for the school mostly owing to the city’s increasing population. The university underwent important structural, administrative, and academic changes during the late 20th century as it developed into a major research university.
