Bethune-Cookman University is a private institution in Daytona Beach, Florida. It was established in 1904. It is also known as B-CU or Bethune Cookman. B-CU is a Historically Black University.
The Motto of the B-CU is Heart, Head, and Hand. B-CU is associated with the United Methodist Church. Its founder’s name is Mary McLeod.
On 3 October 1904, Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School was opened for Negro Girls. This school was merged with the Cookman Institute of Jacksonville in Florida in 1923.
Bethune-Cookman University Overview
It became a co-educational school. Bethune-Cookman College is the outcome of the merger of Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School and Cookman Institute for Boys.
The new institution was called Daytona Cookman Collegiate Institute. It became associated with the Board of Education of the Methodist Church. Later, the school became the Junior College in 1931.
A four-year degree program was established in Liberal Arts and Teacher Training in 1941 when the Florida Department of Education approved 4-year baccalaureate program in Teacher Education and Liberal Arts.
Later, the Board of Trustees changed its name to Bethune Cookman University on February 14, 2007. The campus size of the B-CU is almost 80 acres. It is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Bethune Cookman University Library
Harrison Rhodes Memorial Library was the first library of Bethune-Cookman College which was the honor to Harrison Rhodes of the Rhodes Family.
Upon the death of Margaret who was the sister of Harrison Rhodes, some $560,000 was contributed to Bethune-Cookman College. In 1941, after being replaced with the Carl S. Swisher Library, the Harrison Rhodes Memorial Building started as a campus hall.
