Establishment of the University of Fribourg

In 1580, the roots of the university traced back to hen Jesuit Peter Canisius established the College of Saint Michel in the city of Fribourg.

An Academy of Law was established in 1763 by the government of Fribourg which created the core of the current Law faculty.  By an Act of the Parliament of the Swiss Canton of Fribourg in 1889, this university was officially formed.

Recent Developments of the University of Fribourg

This university started its Perolles 2 campus in 2005 to which the Faculty of Economics & Social Science departed. After the British Museum & the Cairo Museum, this university has the 3rd biggest collection of Biblical Antiquities in the world.

Also, Fribourg has developed a Centre of Excellence in Nanotechnology. Students at any one of these universities may take courses at another in the association as part of the BeNeFri Association containing the Universities of Berne, Neuchatel, and Fribourg. The academic degrees were the Demi-License, License, DEA or DESS, and Doctorate. Nowadays, this university follows the requirements of the Bologna process.

In the academic year 2009-2010, this university introduced a new postgraduate law program which was the Master of Laws in Cross-Cultural Business Practice taught completely in English.
