University Library of Tubingen
This library is the main library of this university. It is the largest and most renowned university in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. In 1477, this library was sited at the Sapienzhaus after the establishment of the university.
Later, it was shifted to the earlier main building of the university and then to the Hohentubingen Castle. In 1912, the oldest building of the library at its present location was completed by the German Architect Paul Bonatz.
The main library is located centrally in the university area of Tubingen East of the old town of Wilhelmstraße near most of the university buildings of the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities Faculties. This library comprised of almost 15,000 items by 1822. This number had improved to 60,000, by 1912 to 514,000, and by 1963 to almost 1.204 million. Nowadays, the overall inventory is around about 3.4 million items.
