Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur is a public institution of technology research in Kharagpur, West Bengal India. It was established in 1951.
The Motto of this institute in English is Excellence in Actiois Yoga. This institute is also known as IIT Kharagpur. This is the first institute of the Indian Institute of Technology to be established. It is well known as an Institute of National Importance.
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur History
A committee by a member of the viceroy executive council named Sir Jogendra Singh considered the formation of Higher Technical Institutions for post-World War II industrial development of India in 1946. This committee was followed by the formation of a2 members headed by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar.
The Sarkar Committee suggested the foundation of higher technical institutions in India in its provisional report along the lines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology & consulting from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.
The report urged that work should begin with the speedy foundation of major institutions in the 4 quarters of the country in the east and the west to be set up immediately. The Chief Minister of West Bengal convinced Jawaharlal Nehru to found the first institute in West Bengal.
In May 1950, the first Indian Institute of Technology was established as the Eastern Higher Technical Institute. It was situated in Esplanade East, Calcutta. In September 1950, it was moved to its permanent campus at Hijli, Kharagpur which is 120 kilometers South-West of Kolkata.

Campus at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur
This institute is situated 120 kilometers West of Kolkata. The campus of IIT Kharagpur is situated 5 kilometers away from Kharagpur Railway Station in West Midnapore District.
Almost 2,100 acres of the campus of this institute are residences to almost 22,000 people. This institution had almost 605 Faculty Members, 1,933 Employees & about 10,010 students living on the campus in 2015. This Institute plans to go Green by 2020. 22 Student Hostels are on either side of Scholars Avenue which extends from the institute gate to the B. C. Roy Technology Hospital.
3 Earliest Halls named Patel, Azad, and Nehru together form the PAN loop or Old Campus located just next to Scholar Avenue. There are almost 10 hostels for Undergraduate Male Students and 2 for Undergraduate Female Students. There are a few Postgraduate student hostels including 4 for women & hostels for research scholars and a separate hostel for scholars from the Armed Forces.
Tagore Open Air Theatre has a capacity of almost 6,000 people and hosts Cultural Programs. The Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Park provides infrastructure facilities to Alumni who want to become entrepreneurs. Further, the institute has an Extension Centre in Kolkata to provide Venues for continuing education programs, distance Learning Courses, and Guesthouse Accommodation to the main campus at Kharagpur.
The 10-acre Rajarhat campus houses almost 2,500 students. This institute’s plan for a similar branch campus of almost 200 acres in Bhubaneswar followed a refusal by the Union Human Resource & Development Ministry.

In 2006, international placements started at this institute. Two foreign companies named Oil Giants Schlumberger & Halliburton visited the institute that year and offered yearly salaries to the tune of almost $80,000. In 2008, the top domestic payment came in at ₹1.8 million per annum.
Goldman Sachs recruited 10 students on a package of ₹2.6 million per annum in the batch of 2011. Facebook has made the highest offer of $150,000 to 4 students for the batch of 2012. For the 2013 batch, 3 students have been offered salaries of ₹8 million per year.

Both phases of the placement drive currently, a total of 1723 offers as of the session 2021-2022, made by several companies, peaking with a CTC of ₹2.4 Crore per annum, which is the highest CTC ever recorded in the history of the Indian Institute of Technology.
