History of Vellore Institute of Technology
VIT was founded under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, of 1956, and was established in 1984 as a Self Financing Institution known as the Vellore Engineering College. In 2001, the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development granted University status to Vellore Engineering College.
This university is headed by its founder and Chancellor Dr. G. Viswanathan, a previous Parliamentarian and minister in the Tamil Nadu Government. He was granted an Honorary Doctorate by the West Virginia University.

The Central library of this institute spreads over an area of 7770 square meters with 6 floors. It has particular collections of Books, Journals, and other resources in Mathematics and sciences, Biotechnology, Engineering and Technology, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Management ranging from Printed Books, E-Books, Back Volumes, and CDs or DVDs.
Also, the library has a Video Conferencing Facility & NPTEL Video Courses. This Central Library is using Koha software for Library Automation and has implemented RFID Technology with an issue and return Kiosk, WEB-OPAC, and Online Renewal Facility.
