Indian Institute of Technology Madras is a public technical institution of higher education in Chennai, Tamil, Nadu India. It was established in 1959.
This university is also known as the IITM or IIT Madras. The motto of this university in English is Success is born out of action. This institution is also familiar as an Institute of National Importance.
History of Indian Institute of Technology Madras
West German Government offered technical assistance for founding an institute of higher education in Engineering in India in 1956. The first Indo-German agreement was signed in Bonn in 1959 for the establishment of the West Germany of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras.
This institute was started with Technical, Academic, and financial Assistance from the Government of West Germany. At that time, it was the largest international educational project sponsored by the West German government.
The government of the Federal Republic of Germany has contracted to provide the following assistance in the foundation of a Higher Technological Institute at Madras which was:
- A Workshop, Laboratory Equipment, and library whose total value does not exceed ₹1.8 crore
- Almost 20 German Professors to serve at the institute for a period of 4 to 5 years
- 4 German Foremen for the workshops of the institute for 2 years
- Facilities for the training of almost 20 Indian teachers in German institutions
This has led to several mutual Research efforts with universities & institutions in Germany over the years. Although official support from the German government has ended the numerous research efforts involving the DAAD program & Humboldt Fellowships still exist.
IIT Madras commences operations with the admission of the first batch of 120 students to the Engineering Course in July 1959. In the same year, the institute is inaugurated by the Union Minister for Scientific Research & Cultural Affairs.
This institution was stated to be Institute of National Importance in 1961. On July 11, 1964, the first convocation ceremony was held with Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. IIT Madras got its first women students in the BTech batch of 1966. In 2009, this institute celebrated its Golden Jubilee & its Diamond Jubilee in 2019.

Campus at Indian Institute of Technology Madras
The main entrance of this institute is on Sardar Patel Road bounded by the residential districts of Adyar & Velachery. The campus of IIT is close to the Raj Bhavan the official seat of the Governor of Tamil Nadu. Other entrances of this institute are on Velachery Gandhi Road and Taramani Gate.
The campus location is 10 km from the Chennai Airport and 12 km from the Chennai Central Railway Station. Two parallel roads which are Bonn Avenue and Delhi Avenue cut through the faculty residential area before they meet at the Gajendra Circle near the Administrative Block.
Buses of this institute often ply between the Main Gate, Academic Zone, Gajendra Circle and hostel Zone. Education officials of India & Tanzania said in July 2023 that an IIT satellite campus in the Tanzanian independent territory of Zanzibar would begin offering classes in October 2023.
