Georgetown University is a private institution of higher education in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. in the United States. It was established in 1789. The motto of this university in English is both into one. It is the oldest Roman Catholic institution in the United States.
History of Georgetown University
In 1789, John Carroll established this university as a Georgetown College. He protected the action to one acre of land on a hilltop overlooking the village of Georgetown.
In 1808, he was selected Archbishop of Baltimore. It began its classes in 1792. Attendance grew to over than 40 students some as far away as the West Indies. The School awarded its first 2 Bachelor’s Degrees.
Blue & Gray
During the Civil War (1861-1865), this university was nearly closed as the student body dropped from 313 to 17 between 1859 and 1861. A total of almost 1,141 Students and Alumni enlisted in the war. It was serving in both the Union and Confederate forces.
In 1862, numerous campus buildings were turned into a temporary hospitals after the Second Battle of Bull Run in Manassas, Virginia. The students of Georgetown chose the colors Blue & gray as the official colors of the School in 1876 to mark the end of the Civil War.
Expanding Education
In 1851, this university founded the School of Medicine and Law School in 1870. Between 1873 & 1882, Patrick F. Healy, S.J. was the president of the university. He was the first African American educated in Ph.D. and the first to head a major United States university.
From 1888 to 1898, Joseph Havens Richards founded established graduate courses in the Arts and sciences. He built new facilities for the law and medical schools. In the 20th century, the expansion of the university continued with the opening of the School of Dentistry in 1901, the School of Nursing in 1903 & the School of Foreign Service. In 1990, the School of Dentistry closed.
War & Peace
In the early 1920s, as the new decade of post-war peace and affluence took off, this university mirrored the period of growth prompting the construction of New North, Copley Hall, White Gravenor Building, and Medical & Dental Building. Enrollment had nearly doubled reaching almost 2,600 in 1930.
War Department designated this university as one of a select number of universities to home the Army Specialized Training Program during World War II. In the academic year 1943-1944, over than 75% of the students enrolled were military servicemen. Women were permitted to enroll in the School of Foreign Service during the 1944-1945.
Post War Era
After World War II, the years saw another boost in enrollment & expansion of the university. In 1957, this university formed the School of Business Administration which was an outgrowth of the School of Foreign Service.
In the 1970s, Students confirmed against the Vietnam War causing some disruptions to classes and campus life. Most of the anger & discontent had been redirected into positive social action by the end of the decade. Students started an annual tradition of spending their spring break helping poor communities outside of Washington, DC.

This university has 4 campuses in Washington, D.C. The undergraduate campus is situated in the neighborhood of Georgetown, the Medical Center, the School of Continuing Studies & the Law Center. The undergraduate campus and Medical Center are together in the Georgetown neighborhood in the Northwest Quadrant of Washington and form the main campus.
Other centers of this university are located around Washington, D.C. with the Center for Continuing and Professional Education at Clarendon in Arlington, Virginia. Transit between these locations and the Washington Metro is completed by a system of shuttles known as GUTS buses.
Also, Georgetown has a branch of the School of Foreign Service in Doha, Qatar & villas in Alanya Turkey & Fiesole in Italy. The administrators of the university constantly used the traditional quadrangle design in their campus layout.
