This university was the first public higher educational institution in Texas. In October 1876, this university opened for classes at the Agricultural & Mechanical College of Texas.  In 1948, it became the flag institution of the Texas A&M University System.

The college grew in size & scope and grew to its largest enrollment during the World War before its first significant stagnation in enrollment post-war in the following decades. In the 1960s, enrollment grew again under the leadership of President James Earl Rudder during whose occupancy the college separated, became coeducational, and finished the requirement for participation in the Corps of Cadets.

To reflect the expanded roles of the institution and academic offerings in 1963, Texas Legislature renamed the college as Texas A&M University. The letters “A&M” were retained as an honor of the former designation of the university. It is the only university in Texas to hold instantaneous designations as a Land, Sea, or space Grant institution.
