King Abdul-Aziz University is a public institution of higher education in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It is a research university. It was founded in 1967. The Motto of this university in English is Read: in the Name of your Lord. It is also known as KAU.
King Abdul-Aziz University History
Private University
The idea of founding a private university in the city of Jeddah was initially put forward by Mohammed Ali Hafiz in the year 1964. A foundation committee of 6 members was formed including Mohamed Ali Hafiz and Muhammad Abu Bakr Bakhashab in the same year. After that, Crown Prince Faisal legally approved the idea.
The executive committee of this university was formed in 1965. This university organized a competition to design their logo in 1966. This university was formally founded as a private university with a target to spread higher education in the western region of Saudi Arabia in the year 1967. There were no higher educational institutions in Jeddah before this date.
These goals were met through the efforts of high-ranking businessmen and notable Saudi figures and with the help of King Faisal’s encouragement and financial support. In 1968, this university began its first academic year with a small number of students. The first faculty of this university was established in 1969, faculty of Arts and Humanities in 1970. This university was named after King Abdul-Aziz founder of Saudi Arabia.
Public University
The Council of Ministers of Saudi Arabia determined to fuse the university with the government to convert it into a public university in the year 1974. It had almost 31,000 students out of which 28% are international according to 2017. The construction of the building was designed by Bangladeshi American architect Fazlur Rahman Khan.
The 1st Arab university by Times Higher Education due to its very strong reference impact and highly international outlook in 2018. Also, it is ranked # 1st in the percentage of total publications with international association according to US News rankings.

Research Programs
This university approved a program to attract the international community and has welcomed almost 150 researchers or a variety of disciplines between 2004 and 2014. KAU has developed international research partners including in Morocco where it has developed a joint planetary research program with the Astronomic Observatory of Oukaïmeden.
KAU has almost 13 different research centers in the fields of Medicine, Climate Change, Environment and energy, and Desalination. The research center on the pilgrimage to Mecca conducts a series of works around the religious event on the aspects of logistics surrounding the pilgrimage established in the 1970s by Sami Angawi.
