University of Michigan is a public and research university in Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States. It was established in 1817. It is also known as U-M UMich or Michigan. The Motto of this university in English is Arts, Knowledge, and Truth.
It is the largest university in Michigan. It is a co-educational institution. U-M is the member of the Association of American Universities.
University of Michigan History
This university was founded as the Cathelopistemiad under the Act of Michigan Territory on August 26, 1817. It was not a university of the present sense but a centralized system of schools, libraries, and other cultural institutions borrowing its model from the Imperial University of France established by Napoleon I a decade before.
Also, Catholepistemiad was approved to found private colleges, libraries, academies, etc through the Michigan Territory. Rev. John Monteith became the first president of Catholepistemiad after the passage of the act of 1817. Almost 3 private schools were in operation before the end of September 1817.
Michigan Territory approved a new act changing significantly the look and nature of the present educational organization on April 30, 1821. A Board of Trustees was selected to oversee the corporation the positions of President and Vice President were eliminated and Monteith and Richard were chosen to the board.
As the legal name of the corporation, the University of Michigan took the place of Catholepistemiad.

University of Michigan Campus
The main of this university is the Ann Arbor campus which is further divided into 4 main areas which are:
- North Campus
- Central Campus
- Medical Campus
- South Campus
The basic structure includes over 500 major buildings with a combined area of further than 37.48 Million square feet. The South and Central Campus areas are contiguous while the North Campus area is separated from them mainly by the Huron River.
All of the 4 campus areas of the university are connected by bus services the majority of which connect the Central and North campuses. Also, the university has increased its sustainability efforts through climate, food systems, energy, water, and construction.
Central Campus
In 1837, this campus was the initial location of Michigan when it shifted to Ann Arbor. It had a school and dormitory building and numerous houses for professors on 40 acres of land bounded by:

This campus is the location of the Science and the Arts, College of Literature and is instantly adjacent to the medical campus. Most of the graduate and professional schools are on central campus including:

Also, two of the prominent libraries of this university are on the central campus which is:

North Campus
This campus of the university is the most contiguous campus built independently from the city on a large plot of farmland of almost 800 acres that the university bought in 1952. This campus is newer than the central campus and has more modernist architecture whereas most central campus buildings are classical in style.
Central and North Campuses have unique bell towers that reflect the main architectural styles of their surroundings. The tower of the North Campus is called Lurie Tower. The university’s largest residence hall named Bursley Hall is situated on North Campus. North Campus houses the following:

This campus is served by the Duderstadt Center which houses the Architecture, Art and Engineering Library. Duderstadt Center comprises numerous computer labs, electronic music studios, video editing studios, an audio studio, multimedia workspaces, a video studio, and a 3D virtual reality room.
South Campus
This campus is the site for the athletic programs including major sports facilities such as Michigan Stadium, Yost Ice Arena, and Crisler Center. Also, this campus is the site of the Buhr Library Storage Facility, the Home of the Michigan Marching Band, Revelli Hall, the Institute for Continuing Legal Education, and the Student Theatre Arts Complex.
The departments of the University of public safety and transportation services offices are situated on South Campus. Michigan golf course is situated south of Michigan Stadium and Crisler Center. In the spring of 1931, the course opened to the public.
