The University of Adelaide was founded on 6 November 1874 following a donation of £20,000 from copper miners Walter Watson-Hughes and Grazier, as well as support and donations from Thomas Elder. The first chancellor of the university was Sir Richard Hanson, and the first vice-chancellor was Augustus Short.

History
The university began teaching in March 1876, and the first degree offered was the Bachelor of Arts. John Davidson was the first Hughes Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy and English Literature. The university has a long history of supporting women’s rights in higher education.
Its first female graduate was Edith Emily Dornwell, who was also the first Australian to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in 1885. Security has the right to evict people smoking inside university buildings and fines for those smoking in walkways or gardens. It is the first higher education institution in South Australia to introduce a smoke-free policy.
The University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia began discussions about a possible merger in 2018. Staff opinion was evenly divided on the commission’s idea. Both universities have argued that by combining their expertise, finances, and resources into one institution, they can be more financially viable with stronger research and teaching outcomes.

Campus
North Terrace
The University’s main campus is on the North Terrace and is bordered by the State Library of South Australia, the Art Gallery of South Australia, the South Australian Museum. The University of Adelaide Dental and Medical School was located behind the old Royal Adelaide Hospital on Frome Road.
Buildings
The Elder Hall and Bonython Hall, along with the Napier, Ligertwood, and Mitchell buildings, form the North Terrace Street frontage of the campus. The Napier Building was constructed between 1958 and 1965, funded by the Commonwealth and State Governments. It was named after Sir Miles Napier, chancellor of the university from 1948 to 1961.
Master Plan
The university began work on a 20-year A$1 billion master plan for its three campuses in 2016. The Schulz building on North Terrace will be redeveloped as an on-campus residential college with housing and recreational facilities including a gym.
Waite
The Waite campus has a strong focus on biotechnology, agricultural science and plant breeding. The School of Agriculture, Wine and Food is based on the White Campus and the campus includes Environmental Sciences and School of Earth components.
Roseworthy
The Roseworthy campus, north of the city, covers 16 km of farmland and is a major center for agricultural research. It was Australia’s first agricultural college, established in 1883 and in 2008 the first veterinary school in SA. The college merged with the University of Adelaide in 1991 to become the university’s Roseworthy Campus, part of the Natural Resource Sciences and Faculty of Agricultural.

Libraries
- Barr Smith Library
The University of Adelaide Library has a proud and unique history, and has been central to university life since its inception in the 1890s and began in the Mitchell Building. The University Council decided in 1899 to name the library after its greatest benefactor, Robert Barr Smith.
- Sir John Salmond Law Library
The Sir John Salmond Law Library was moved to the Ligertwood Building in 1967 and renamed in 1969 in honor of Sir John William Salmond, the third Professor of Law who held the position from 1897-1905.
- Roseworthy Library
Roseworthy Agricultural College joined the University of Adelaide in 1991 and is located 50km north of Adelaide near the town of Roseworthy.
- Waite Campus Library
The Waite Campus Library supports the teaching and research of the School of Agriculture, Wine and Food located in Urrbrae 7 km south of Adelaide, on the Waite Campus. The Waite Campus property was gifted to the University of Adelaide in 1913 by Peter Waite.
- Elder Music Library
The Elder Music Library provides services and resources to support research and teaching at the Elder Conservatorium of Music.
Research
The University of Adelaide is one of Australia’s most research-intensive universities, receiving more than $180 million in research funding annually. Its researchers are engaged in commercial and basic research in a wide range of fields including psychology, agriculture, engineering, and health sciences.
Research strengths include science, engineering, mathematics, health sciences and medical, agricultural sciences, arts, and artificial intelligence. The University of Adelaide has taken advantage of opportunities to commercialize its research. The university has the highest volume of commercial research contracts of all Australian universities.
In addition, the university participates in the Auto-ID Labs, a network of seven research universities in the field of networked radio-frequency identification and emerging sensing technologies.
The university partnered with SA Health to train COVID-19 detector dogs in 2020. Other university partners include the Hanson Institute and the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Administration and Organization
Peter Hoj commenced his tenure as 24th Vice-Chancellor in 2021, taking over from Peter Rathjen (2018–20) and Interim VC Mike Brooks (2017–18, 2020–21). Rathjen begins an indefinite leave of absence in 2020 after University of Adelaide Chancellor Kevin Scarce resigned without public explanation the previous day.
The university has three faculties, down from five in 2022. This is following a merger of the Professions faculty with the Arts faculty and the Faculty of Engineering with the Faculty of Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Computer.
Each faculty consists of schools from different constituencies.
