Monash University is a public research university located in Australia, it is named after the distinguished World War I General Sir John Monash. It was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1958 and is the second oldest university in the state.
About Monash University
History
The original campus was in the suburb of Clayton where the university was given a large site of 100 hectares of open land. It offered postgraduate and undergraduate degrees in law, arts, engineering, medicine, science, politics, education, and economics in its early years.
It was a major provider of international students under the Colombo Plan, which allowed the first Asian students to enter the Australian education system. Monash became a center of student radicalism in Australia from the 1960s to the 1970s.
The Dawkins Reforms changed the landscape of higher education in Australia in the late 1980s. Monash has changed dramatically under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Mal Logan. Monash University had only one campus in Clayton, with approximately 15,000 students in 1988.
The university’s expansion began in 1990 with the merger between Chisholm Institute of Technology, Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education, and Monash. Australian universities faced unprecedented demand for international student places, which Monash more than met at the same time.

Main Campuses
- Clayton
The Australian Synchrotron is located at the Clayton Campus of the university. The Clayton campus is the largest of the Monash campuses and covers an area of over 1.1 km. Clayton is home to faculties of Education, Arts, Economics and Business, Medicine, Engineering, IT, Nursing, Law and Science, Pharmaceutical Science and Health Sciences.
- Caulfield
The Caulfield campus is the second largest Monash University campus. Its multidisciplinary nature is reflected in the range of programs it offers through its faculties of Medicine, Arts, Business and Economics, Art Design and Architecture, Information Technology, Health Sciences, and Nursing.
- The Alfred
Located at the Alfred Hospital, Monash University’s Alfred Campus houses the School of Public Health and the Central School of Clinical and Preventive Medicine, which includes the Department of Epidemiology and the Department of Forensic Medicine.
- Parkville
The Parkville campus is located 2km north of Melbourne on Royal Parade in the Melbourne suburb of Parkville. The campus is home to the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Faculty of Pharmacy. The faculty specializes in pharmaceuticals, formulation science, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacy practice.
- Peninsula
The campus is located in the coastal suburb of Frankston on the fringes of Melbourne. The Peninsula campus has a research and teaching focus on health and wellness and is a center for postgraduate and undergraduate studies in occupational therapy, health science, physiotherapy, nursing and psychology, and particularly emergency health courses.
- City
The centrally located Monash Law City Campus houses the Postgraduate Faculty of Law and it provides teaching for the Monash JD and Law Masters programs.
Libraries
Monash University Library spans three continents, currently operates several libraries across its campuses, and holds over 3.2 million items. The Sir Louis Matheson Library, located on the Clayton campus, has a rare book collection of over 100,000 items, valued for their physical beauty, uniqueness, or age, which are accessible to students and Monash staff.
The collection began when university librarians purchased original manuscripts by Jonathan Swift and some of his contemporaries in 1961. The collection now includes children’s books, photography, French and English literature from the 15th to 17th centuries, pamphlets, and original manuscripts.
The Rare Books area hosts a variety of exhibitions throughout the year.

Research
Monash University staff produces more than 3,000 research publications each year, covering over 150 areas of study. Monash University is home to over 120 research institutes and centers.
Major interdisciplinary research centers include the Monash Center for Synchrotron Science, the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, and the Monash University Accident Research Centre.

Administration and Organization
The university’s chief executive is the vice-chancellor, who heads Monash’s day-to-day operations. An equivalent role is that of principal or president in North America and parts of Europe.
Margaret Gardner is the current Vice-Chancellor and President, the first woman to hold the position, and was named on 1 September 2014. The Chancellor advises the Vice-Chancellor as well as performs ceremonial duties and heads the University Council.
Academics
Monash University is among the hardest universities for domestic students to get into in Australia, with each campus receiving an admission standards score of 5/5. This equates to more than 15,000 first preferences of Victorian high school leavers.
Of the students in the top 0.05% of high school applicants with a perfect ENTER score of 99.95, 63 applied to Monash in 2009.
