University of New South Wales is a public institution of higher education in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is a research university. This university was founded in 1949.  It is also known as UNSW. The Motto of this university in English is Knowledge by Heart, Hand, and Mind.

This university is the founding member of the Group of Eight (Go8). UNSW has International Exchange and Research Partnerships with more than 200 universities in the world. This university is highly ranked in International and domestic university ranking tables. It consists of 7 faculties through which this university offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral Degrees.

University of New South Wales History

Founding

The start of the university can be traced to the Sydney Mechanics School of Arts founded in 1833 and the Sydney Technical College founded in 1878. The thought of establishing the university originated from the crisis demands of World War II.

The post-war Labor government of New South Wales accepted the increasing need to have a university specialized in training High Quality Engineers and Technology Related Professionals in numbers away from that the capacity and characteristics of the presented the University of Sydney.

On 9 July 1946, the suggestion to found the Institute of Technology submitted by the New South Wales Minister for Education Bob Heffron was accepted. In 1949, the New South Wales University of Technology achieved its legal status through the enactment of the New South Wales University of Technology Act 1949 by the Parliament of New South Wales in Sydney.

Early Years

Classes started at this university with a first intake of 46 students in different programs involving Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering Civil Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. The Thesis Programs were new at that time.

This university operated initially from the inner Sydney Technical College city campus in Ultimo as a separate institution from the college. The Parliament of New South Wales approved the New South Wales University of Technology Act 1951 to provide funding in 1951 and allow buildings to be erected at the Kensington site where the university is situated now.

Expansion

This university was renamed as University of New South Wales in 1958. It is reflecting a renovation from a Technology-Based Institution to a Generalist university.

The first director of this university was Arthur Denning who made an important charity to establish the university. The academic book publishing company University of New South Wales Press was launched in 1962.

Recent History

The Lowy Cancer Research Centre which is Australia’s first facility bringing together researchers in childhood and adult cancer opened in 2010. In 2012, Private sources donated almost 45% of the university’s annual funding and UNSW Press celebrated its 50th anniversary and launched the UNSW Bragg Prize for Science Writing this year.

According to the Student Experience Survey in 2019, this university recorded the lowest student satisfaction rating out of all Australian universities. This university announced almost 493 job cuts and a 25% lessening in management due to the effects of COVID-19.

The former name of this university was New South Wales University of Technology from 1949 to 1958.
