Florida A&M University

Florida A&M University is a public, coeducational, and historically black land grant university in Tallahassee, Florida. It is also known as Florida A&M University and FAMU. The Motto of the Florida A&M University is Excellence with Caring. It was established in 1887.

Jonathan C. Gibs first introduced legislation to form the State Normal College for Colored Students. After one year, it was selected for Florida Legislation.

Florida A&M University Overview

Normal College for Colored Students started classes on October 3, 1887. Later, it became a Land Grant College for four years when it received almost $75,00 under the Second Morrill Act. After that, its name was changed to State Normal and Industrial for Colored Students.

The name of the college was again changed in 1909 to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes. The pharmacy and Nursing program began at the university in 1951. In 1953, FAMU was granted university status.
