Minister Li Duanfen proposed to create a university in the capital in 1896. The Guangxu Emperor, as part of the Hundred Days’ Reform, authorized the creation of the Imperial University of Peking in 1898. About Peking University
History
The university operation was suspended when Eight Power Allied Forces entered Beijing and the university was paralyzed in 1900. Later change the name of the University is the Government University of Peking in 1912 and the National University of Peking in 1919.
Early Republic of China Period
In 1917, a scholar Cai Yuanlpei was appointed president, who helped transform the University into the country’s largest institution for higher learning, with an enrollment of more than 2000 students and 14 departments. The campus of Peking University moved to Yenching University in 1952 before originally being located at Forbidden City in the center of Beijing.
